German Rouladen

My German friend taught me this dish, and my hubby has been requesting it weekly since!

German Rouladen

Description:This traditional German dish features tender beef rolls filled with savory ingredients and simmered in a flavorful broth until tender. Perfect for a cozy family dinner!

Ingredients:

- 4 slices top round beef, about 1/4 inch thick
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to
 taste

- 4 teaspoons German mustard (or substitute with Dijon or spicy mustard)

- 4 slices bacon

- 1 onion, thinly sliced

- 4 small dill pickles, sliced lengthwise

- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

- 1 cup beef broth

Directions:

1. Begin by tenderizing the beef slices to an even thickness and season with salt and pepper.

2. Spread a teaspoon of mustard over each beef slice, then layer with bacon, onion slices, and a dill pickle.

3. Roll up the beef slices tightly and secure with toothpicks or kitchen twine.

4. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the rouladen on all sides and remove from the pan.

5. Deglaze the pan with beef broth, scraping up the browned bits.

6. Return the rouladen to the pan, add the remaining broth, and simmer covered on low heat for 1 to 1.5 hours until tender.

7. Once cooked, remove the rouladen and thicken the pan juices with a flour or cornstarch slurry for gravy.

8. Serve the rouladen with gravy, removing any toothpicks or twine beforehand.

Variations & Tips:

- For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free flour or cornstarch to thicken the gravy.

- Try using smoked bacon for added flavor depth.

- Enhance the sauce by adding a splash of red wine during deglazing.

- Get creative with additional fillings like chopped mushrooms or horseradish.

- Leftover rouladen can be enjoyed cold or reheated gently for another meal.
