Puerto Rican Pastelón Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 ripe plantains
  • 1/2 kg ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup butter or olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Slice the ripe plantains into thin lengthwise slices.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion and minced garlic until browned.
  3. Add the tomato sauce and let it simmer for a few minutes. Then reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. In a baking dish, layer a bottom layer of plantain slices.
  5. Layer the ground beef mixture on top of the first layer of plantains.
  6. Repeat the layers alternating between plantains and beef mixture until all ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of plantains on top.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
