Sourdough Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 2/3 cups white sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch cake pan.
    • Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and white sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
    • Stir in the sourdough starter until well combined.
  3. Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients:
    • Slowly add the sifted flour mixture to the creamed mixture, beating until smooth.
    • Stir in the cold water and vanilla extract, blending well until the batter is smooth and homogeneous.
  4. Bake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
